Stephen Westerman

d. June 20, 2016

It is with heartfelt sadness that we announce the passing of prominent Worcester business owner STEPHEN WESTERMAN, president of Westerman Restaurant and Store Equipment for over 50 years on Monday, June 20th 2016. Stephen was born in Worcester, one of three sons of Herman and Anna (Gaffin) Westerman.  He graduated from Classical High School and Worcester Junior College.  He served his country in the Massachusetts Army National Guard during the Vietnam Era and in 1959 founded his company in a small store front on Temple Street selling knives and butcher supplies.  As his company grew, Stephen moved his company from Temple Street to 54-56 Green Street and expanded it as he grew.  Stephen had a natural ability to project changes in the business landscape, which allowed him to refocus business from small stores to restaurants.  It was this move that allowed his business to skyrocket to success.  He believed that in all his business years, he worked closely with his customers.  He took a personal interest in each and every customer, not simply as a revenue-producing client, but as family. He knew all his customers on a first name basis.   He sold quality equipment at reasonable prices and guaranteed each sale.   He succeeded and thrived in business for over 50 years.  In death his business and values will proceed on with his Vice President and best friend for over 35 years Ronald Entwistle as president and owner. Stephen is survived by his devoted wife for over  34 years, Susanne (Mero) Westerman; a daughter, Shelli Haddad; two brothers, Carl Westerman of Auburn and Thomas Westerman of Worcester; three grandchildren he cherished and who cherished him, Ryan, Jillian, and Joshua Haddad;  nephew David Westerman;  Several other nieces, nephews ,extended family members and friends. Stephen was very active in the Jewish and business community as a whole.  He was a member of the Morning Star and Level Lodges AF & AM, the Aleppo Shriners, B’nai B’rith International Scottish Rite bodies, the Massachusetts Restaurant Association, Worcester Chamber of Commerce and Worcester Business Association. Friends and relatives are invited to calling hours Today, Tuesday June 21st from 3:00 pm to 8:00 pm in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St.   His funeral service will be held Wednesday June 22, 2016 at 11:00 am in Temple  Beth Israel, 15 Jamesbury Drive,  Worcester.   Burial will follow in B’nai B’rith Cemetery.  Memorial remembrances in his name can be made to Why Me & Sherry’s House, 1152 Pleasant Street Worcester 01602. In honor of Stephen’s  memory the Westerman Restaurant  & Equipment  will be closed on Wednesday June 22nd.
