William "Bill" Caffone

William A. “Bill” Caffone, 89, of Millbury, formerly of Worcester, passed away with loved ones gathered at his bedside. 

Bill was born in Worcester, the son of Carmine and Elvira (DeSantis) Caffone. He graduated from Worcester Boys Trade. He then joined the U.S. Army serving his country for four years in the Panama Canal Zone trained in Jungle Warfare. Upon discharge, he returned home and married the “Love of his Life” Marguerite Johnston in 1962. They then settled in the Bell Hill area and later the Massasoit Rd. neighborhood to raise their daughter with faith, love, family, and dedication until “Peggy” left his side on October 25th, 1994. 

Bill is survived by his daughter with whom he lived Marguerite Duncan, and her husband Earl Duncan Jr. of Millbury; two grandchildren he adored, Earl Duncan III and his girlfriend, Xaulanda Thorpe and Gianna Duncan and her fiancée Christopher Wilson. A sister, Rita Kane of Whitinsville; Many nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends. He also leaves behind his three Godchildren William Caffone, Linda Boll, and Chip Sena. In addition to his wife and parents, three brothers, Angelo, Ernest, and Anthony Caffone and a sister, Mary Altomare predeceased him. 

Bill began his working career as a chef for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts at Worcester and Westborough State Hospital’s before accepting a position as a Corrections Officer for the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office rising in rank before retiring as Captain in 1989. He was fondly referred to as “Lefty” by those who worked with him. Bill spent many years vacationing on Cape Cod and Bermuda with his wife, daughter, and extended family. Later in life, he embarked on traveling extensively to Italy, Scotland, France, The Netherlands, and Morrocco. Bill was passionate about theater and loved to spend his time seeing musicals with friends and family. As an avid New England sports fan, Bill was never too far from the TV to watch the Celtics, Patriots, and most importantly, his Boston Red Sox. 

Being a proud Army Veteran, he loved to go to Air Shows at Westover ARB with his Son-in-Law, Earl and his three brothers Angelo, Ernest, and Anthony. Out of all his passions, his greatest was his grandchildren Earl & Gianna watching them grow up, attending their sporting events, and attending school functions. Bill was one proud grandfather watching his grandchildren graduate with their bachelor’s and master’s degrees. They were his whole life which brought him so much happiness. 

 An active member of the Knight’s of Colombus Pope John XXIII Council he served as Chancellor and received his fourth degree from the Bishop O’Reily Assembly. Later, he joined the Mount Carmel Knights of Colombus Council #13575. He was a member of the Worcester Lodge 168 Sons & Daughter’s of Italy in America and the American Legion post 414 in Sutton, MA. Bill was a lifelong member of Our Lady of Mt Carmel church where he was an altar server and later became an usher.

 Relatives and friends are invited to calling hours, Tuesday, June 4th from 4 pm to 7 pm in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. Worcester, MA. His funeral will be held Wednesday, June 5th from the funeral home with a procession beginning at 10:30 to Our Lady of Loreto/Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, 37 Massasoit Rd where his funeral Mass will be celebrated by his friend Monsignor Pedone at 11:00 am. Entombment with military honors will follow in St. John Mausoleum. Flowers may be sent or memorial contributions in his name made to the Lucas CPR machine fund, care of the Sons of American Legion Squadron 414, P.O. Box 403, Sutton, MA 01590 Attention: Jesse Limanek.  Members of the Worc Lodge 168, Order Sons of Italy will meet at 6 pm Tuesday in the funeral home to conduct their ritual.   Members of the Mt Carmel Knights of Columbus, will meet at 6:30 pm at the funeral home to conduct their ritual
