Listen to Obituary

Steven Alan Groves, 66, of Worcester, Mass. passed away on August 10, 2025 surrounded by his loving family after a battle with Alzheimer’s Disease.

Steve was born in Boston, Mass. to Victor and Mary (Wallace) Groves on January 12, 1959. He grew up in Roslindale and attended school at Boston Latin and Catholic Memorial High School. He was a gifted athlete who excelled at track and field.

He graduated from Southeastern Massachusetts University (now University of Massachusetts Dartmouth) with a degree in engineering. After a stellar track and field career at SMU, Steve was inducted to the Corsair Hall of Fame as part of the 1980 Track and Field Team.

He met his lifelong love and partner at SMU, Betsy (Murray) Groves. Steve and Betsy were married for more than 41 years. He also met his best friends at SMU, Paul and Stephanie Outerson.

Following in his father’s footsteps, Steve worked in construction for more than 40 years. He loved the industry and was proud of his work, especially his commitment to safety on his job sites. He worked for Suffolk Construction for many years and finished his career with Bald Hill Builders.

He was skilled in many trades and could always be counted on to help friends and family members with projects.

Steve’s pride and joy were his kids, Emily, Sam and Mary. He spent decades cheering (and poorly videotaping) from the sidelines of soccer and field hockey games, and helped to coach track and field and hockey. He loved his four grandchildren tremendously.

His favorite place in the world was his family cottage in Maine, which he worked for decades to keep up for future generations. He also loved trips to the beach and to Key West with Betsy, Steph, and Paul.

Steve was a lifelong Boston sports fan and especially loved to watch baseball, hockey, and UConn Women’s Basketball.

Steve was preceded in death by father Victor, mother Mary, nephew Chris Johns, mother-in-law Delia Murray, sister Barbara Johns, and brother Robert Groves.

Steve is survived by: his wife Betsy of Worcester, Mass.; his children and their spouses Emily and Andy Morrison of Putnam, Conn., Sam and Laura Groves of Dedham, Mass., and Mary and Kanika Cummings-Groves of Mansfield, Mass.; his grandchildren Haley and Leah Morrison and Reese and Cameron Groves; his sister Susan MacKenzie of Milton, Mass.; his brother-in-law Norris Johns of Foxboro, Mass; his goddaughter Jessica (Outerson) Szivos and her family of Auburn, Mass.; and many nieces and nephews, especially his nephew and best friend Craig Johns and family of Carlsbad, Cali.; as well as extended family members and friends.

The family would also like to thank Nancy Murray and Glenn Kessler, Mary Ann O’Brien-Gilmore and Bob Gilmore, and Jill Colton-Spina for their friendship and support throughout Steve’s life and during the course of his illness.

Family and friends are invited to visiting hours on Friday August 15 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Mercadante Funeral Home and Chapel, 307 Plantation Street, Worcester, Mass. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday August 16 at Mercadante. Burial will be private and at a later date.
