Robert J. Alford, 78, of Worcester, passed away on Tuesday, May 27, 2025, at UMass Hospital in Worcester.
Robert is survived by his two loving sisters, Sandra Troy and her husband Kenneth of Surprise, AZ, and Velma Jenkins of Worcester; his beloved niece and friend, Sarah Barnes of Worcester; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by five siblings, Harold, Larry, and Carl Alford, Latrell Barnes, and Gloria Larkin. Robert was born in Worth County, Georgia, son of the late, Leroy and Eldora (Brooken) Alford. He graduated from Crooms High School in Sanford, FL, before moving to Worcester where he worked for the former Norton Company before moving on and graduating from the former Brom’s Academy. He also trained and became certified in precision hair cut techniques at the legendary Vidal Sassoon Academy in Los Angeles.
Robert was a very talented hair stylist/barber and operated “Unique Hair Salon” in Worcester for many years before retiring in 2019. His artistic ability was unmatched, and he had often traveled to and participated in national hair shows with his brother Carl. He loved traveling in Europe and he was reasonably proficient in the French language. He was a great athlete who enjoyed playing basketball; and was scouted by several colleges to play football and baseball. He dabbled as a stock car racing driver and followed the sport to this day.
Calling Hours will be on Wednesday, June 11, from 10 am until his Funeral Service begins at 11:30 am in MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation Street, Worcester. Interment will follow at Hope Cemetery in Worcester.
