Retired Worcester Police Officer, Michael A. Portuondo, 76, of Punta Gorda, Florida, formerly of Worcester passed away surrounded by the family he loved Monday, October 28th, 2024, after a series of health challenges.
Born in New York City, Michael was the son of Miguel and Violet (Zapata) Portuondo. Raised and educated in New York, Mike joined the U.S. Marine Corps during Vietnam serving his country proudly. Upon discharge, Michael came to Worcester and accepted a position with the Worcester County Registry of Deeds. In 1977, Mike was appointed to the Worcester, Police Department where he served and protected the citizens of Worcester as a patrolman for over 30 years before retiring in 2009. Mike and Patricia then made the decision to move to Punta Gorda permanently, returning often to Worcester to visit family and friends.
Michael is survived by his love, best friend, soulmate, and wife of 37 years, Patricia A (Bratchell) Portuondo: three children he cherished and was so proud of, Andrea M. Peak, Worcester Police Officer, Mark A. Portuondo and his wife Nicole all of Worcester, Alec M. Portuondo and his wife Carine of Hudson; a sister, Violet Marrero of New York City, John and Anthony Portuondo both in Florida, and Daniel Portuondo of Texas; nine grandchildren; two great grandchildren; a brother in law, William Bratchell and his wife Maryanne, two sisters in law, Debra Bratchell and Karen Grady; Many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Michael was a member of St Antonio Church in Florida, the IBPO union 9-11, the Worcester Police Credit union, Massachusetts Police Association, and the Worcester Detachment of the Marine Corps league. Mike and Patricia loved to travel, Mike’s favorite being Carbo San Lucas, motorcycles, boating, watching the New England Patriots and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and dining out, his favorite food being Maine Lobsters only.
Friends and relatives are invited to gather for calling hours, Monday, November 4th from 4 pm to 7 pm in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. His funeral will be held Tuesday, November 5th from the funeral home with a procession to St Mary’s Church, 640 Main Street, Shrewsbury where his celebration of Christian burial Mass will be held at 11:30 am. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers memorial remembrances in his name can be made to either the Central Mass Vets Inc, 60 Grove Street or the Tunnels to Towers foundation, www.T2T.org.
