Peter A. Yurkenas, 83, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at UMass Memorial Medical Center - University Campus in Worcester.

He is survived by his loving children, Tamara Nowak and her husband Krzysztof Nowak of Charlton, MA; Melissa Young and her husband Chris of Pittsfield, ME; and Anthony Yurkenas of Heath, MA; his five cherished grandchildren David Young, Anthony Yurkenas Jr., Victoria Nowak, Gracelynn Yurkenas and Caroline Nowak; his sister Martha Lanter and her husband Tom; and his close friend Bob Salmonson along with Bob’s family.

Peter was born in Worcester on November 9, 1942, son of the late Matthew and Alice (Gaides) Yurkenas. He earned his Associate’s Degree from Worcester Technical College and was proud to be an Eagle Scout. A lifelong entrepreneur and boating enthusiast, Peter owned Fleet Marine, located on the shores of Lake Quinsigamond in Worcester, for many years. He later worked for 25 years as a District Technical Service Manager for American Suzuki Motor Corporation - Marine Division.

Peter proudly served his country in the United States Coast Guard and was recognized throughout his service. He was also commended by the Massachusetts House of representatives for single-handedly saving four youths on Lake Quinsigamond, earning the Treasury Department’s highest lifesaving award and bronze medals from the Humane Society of Massachusetts.

Peter was a man of many talents, passions and accomplishments. He enjoyed building intricate model ships and model airplanes, combining patience, creativity and craftsmanship. He was a renowned fisherman throughout the Northeast and Cape Cod, respected for his skill, dedication and love of the sport.

Peter was a longtime member of the Green Water Wizards Bass Club, Bassmasters and the Marlboro Fish & Game Association. Deeply involved in the fresh and salt water bass fishing community, he proudly hosted numerous bass tournaments and Bassmasters Opens at Fleet Marine, bringing together anglers from across the region and helping grow the sport he loved. An avid boater, Peter felt most at home on the water.

Above all else, family was the center of Peter’s life. He was a devoted father, grandfather and friend. Spending time with his grandchildren brought him immense joy, especially sharing laughter and friendly competition during family board games. He will be remembered for his independence, generosity, adventurous spirit and the countless skills and life lessons he passed on to those he loved.

His memory will live on in the hearts of his family, friends and all who were fortunate enough to know him.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2026 at 9:00 am in St. John’s Cemetery, 260 Cambridge Street, Worcester. Please go directly to the cemetery.
