It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Michael M. Sokal, 80, at his home in Worcester, MA on Thursday, December 18, 2025.
Michael was a committed husband, father, educator, and lifelong learner. He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Charlene Sokal, with whom he built a life rooted in partnership and curiosity. He was a proud and loving father to Kate Groves (Ashley) and Matt Sokal, grandfather to Cecilia, Sophia, Lydia, and Payton who were the greatest joys of his life, and brother to Richard Sokal (Sherri).
Born in Brooklyn, New York, on October 6, 1945, Michael was the son of the late Martin and Adele (Wattenberg) Sokal. After earning a degree in engineering and a doctorate in history, Michael became a Professor of History at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and published many works exploring the history of science, technology, and psychology. He also served as an editor and administrator for several prominent national organizations, including the History of Science Society, American Psychological Association, National Endowment for the Humanities, and National Science Foundation.
Outside the classroom, Michael enjoyed traveling and was always eager to explore new places and cultures. He had a particular fondness for penguins, admiring the male penguin’s paternal devotion to carefully protecting and nurturing the unborn hatchling’s egg through its long maturation. He will be remembered for his sharp mind, gentle humor, unwavering kindness, complete inability but great willingness to sing, and profound love he had for his family.
A memorial service to celebrate his life will take place at 10am on Tuesday, January 13, 2026, at First Unitarian Church, 90 Main Street Worcester. There are no calling hours.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Michael’s memory to the American Heart Association at https://www.heart.org/.
