Mario F. Catanzaro, 97, of Worcester, formerly of Shrewsbury, passed away with loved ones at his side, Monday, April 13, 2026.
Mario was born in Worcester, one of five children of James and Regina (Gagliano) Catanzaro. He graduated from Commerce high school, joined the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict serving his country aboard the Destroyer McCaffery. Upon discharge and return to Worcester, Mario began a career as a machinist for several area companies including, Heald Machine, and Merrill-Usher Company before retiring in 1980.
Mario is survived by five children, Mary Catanzaro of Falmouth, Susan McKeown of Shrewsbury, James Catanzaro, Mario Catanzaro and his wife Donna all of Shrewsbury, Jonathon and his wife Heather of Worcester; 10 grandchildren; 9 Great grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, and extended family members. In addition to his parents, three sisters, Mary Chilorio, Sally Miano and Frances Olson, all predeceased him.
Mario was a devoted and proud U.S. Veteran and dedicated member of the Eastside Post 201, American Legion. He volunteered his time at the post in every endeavor they had. Be it meals for the veterans, meetings, New Year’s Eve and memorial parades, Mario was always involved. A sports enthusiast, Mario uncharacteristically, supported teams outside the area. He loved the Detroit Lions, and Tigers and followed them intently. In his younger days he was involved and coached his son’s baseball teams.
Funeral services and burial with Navy honors in Mt View Cemetery were held privately. Memorial remembrances in his name can be made to the Eastside Post 201, American legion, 326 Plantation St Worcester 01604. The MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St is honored to assist the family once more.
