Josephine (Vescera) Mellen, 92, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 16, 2026 at St. Vincent Hospital in Worcester. She is survived and greatly missed by her loving children Scott Mellen of Millbury, Jeffrey Mellen of Holden, and Lisa Kilday and her husband Paul of Derry, NH; four grandchildren- Elyssa, Kristopher, Olivia, and Sophia; two great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews, including Gary and Peter Sclamo, with whom she was very close. She was predeceased in 2021 by her beloved husband of 58 years Edward F. Mellen, and siblings Ralph Vescera, Laura McNamara, and her twin Marcie Sclamo.
Josephine was born on March 24, 1933 in Worcester, daughter of the late Celestino and Celestina (Colletta) Vescera. She graduated from Commerce High School. While she was in high school, she worked as an administrator for State Mutual, retiring after 45 years. Upon retirement, she enjoyed working for Gary and Peter in the office of Sclamo’s even until recently she would shred papers.
To Josephine, family meant the world. She adored her children and grandchildren. She loved to have a house full of people- the more the merrier. She was proud being Italian and showed her love through food. She especially loved going to the Cape with her family and spending summers together on the beach and eating fried clams. Cape Cod was her happy place. She also enjoyed going to yard sales and being chauffeured from place to place. Best of all, she loved to dance with her husband when Edward was alive. Josephine had a very supportive and close family. She will truly be missed.
A period of visitation will be held on Friday, February 27, 2026 from 10:00am – 12:00pm at Mercadante Funeral Home & Chapel, 370 Plantation Street, Worcester. A memorial service will follow at 12:00pm in the funeral home. Burial at St. John’s Cemetery will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The American Heart Association.
