Josephine Ann Calabro was born on August 8, 1931, in New York City to Michele and Concetta Puglisi. Raised in a close-knit family that owned a neighborhood grocery store, she learned early the values of hard work, community, and compassion. She shared her childhood with her sister, Nina White, with whom she maintained a lifelong bond.

A woman of intelligence, she went on to serve as a United Nations ambassador, a role that reflected her deep respect for humanity and the world beyond her own. In 1967, Josephine married Dr. John James Calabro, a respected rheumatologist. Together they built a beautiful life until his passing in 1988. In 1968, they welcomed their son, John, who was the pride and joy of Josephine’s life.  Josephine made her home in several places over the years, including New York City, New York; Paxton, Massachusetts; Buffalo, New York; Naples, Florida; and Newnan, Georgia.

She is survived by her son, John James Calabro; her daughter-in-law, Julie Wells Calabro (Hamlen); and her three cherished grandsons, Samuel John Calabro, Henry Wells Calabro, and Knox Richard Calabro. She also treasured her relationship with her sister, Nina White, and niece, Michele Carey, with whom she shared many special moments.

A gifted and passionate artist, Josephine found great joy in painting, particularly watercolor. She  spent many summers painting alongside her sister on Lake Winnipesaukee. She also had a keen eye for photography and a lifelong love of cats.

Josephine will be remembered as a wonderful mother, sister, wife, grandmother, and friend. Her love, creativity, and devotion to family will live on in the hearts of all who knew her. She will be deeply missed.

Funerals and entombment in Notre Dame Mausoleum were held privately. The MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St is honored to assist the family with arrangements.
