Joseph A. Maple, Jr., 81 of Worcester, passed away at home on Thursday, April 16, 2026.
Joe was born in Worcester, a son of the late Joseph A. and Dorothy (Dion) Maple. He grew up in Worcester, graduating from Commerce High School. Joe worked as a cab driver for many years before retiring due to illness. He excelled in sports, especially softball, traveling the country, playing and coaching and was well known as a local sports legend in Worcester throughout the 70s, 80s and early 90s. Joe spent most of his life going to any local sports game but enjoyed watching his children and grandchildren’s games the most. Joe was involved with the Friendly House and volunteered annually at the golf tournaments.
Joe also loved fishing especially when it was at Wachusett Reservoir, Pulaski, NY and Lake Winnipesaukee, was an avid pool player and a diehard Los Angeles Dodgers Fan. He was a devoted father and grandfather and will be sorely missed by his passing.
Joe is survived by his three sons, Francis Maple of Dunstable, MA., Joseph Maple and his wife Lisa of Worcester and James Maple of Centerville, MA.; his daughter, Christine McMahon and her husband Francis of Charlton; two brothers, Robert Maple of Holden and George Maple of Webster; two sisters, Corlene Saad of Spencer and Caroll Flynn of Oxford; nine beloved grandchildren, Mark Belculfine and his fiancé Joslyn, Matthew Belculfine and his wife Bryanna, Alyssa McMahon and her fiancé Christopher, Sarah Maple, Lauren Maple, Candace Maple, Carter Maple, Alexander Maple and Emily Maple; three great grandchildren, Raelyn, Ryleigh and Luka; several nieces nephews, friends and extended family. Besides his parents, Joe was predeceased by a brother, Donald Maple and a sister, Shirley DiLiddo.
Relatives and friends are invited to calling hours on Thursday, April 23, 2026 from 3-7 pm with his funeral service immediately following at 7:00 pm in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St., Worcester. In lieu of flowers, kindly consider donating to: The Friendly House, Diabetes Research or The Worcester Challenger’s League.
