Johnny McCoy, Jr., 77, of Worcester, passed away on Friday, October 3, 2025, in the comfort of his home while surrounded by loving family and friends. He was predeceased by his wife, Katherine (Brown) McCoy in 1982. He lived a life of faith and knew that he was blessed everyday.
Johnny is survived by a son, Johnny McCoy, III and his wife Dawn of Oxford; two daughters, Angela McCoy of Auburn and Anna Leto of Worcester; a step daughter, Sally Swift of Worcester; a brother, Kenneth White of Tuscaloosa, AL; four sisters, Elizabeth Smith of Tuscaloosa, AL, Patricia Myers and her husband Will of Tuscaloosa, AL, Alfreda Murphy of Boca Raton, FL, and Dorothy Jones and her husband George of Hulls, AL; sixteen grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren; a host of nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son, Derrick Leto; a grandson, Donnell Richardson; a great grandson, Jermaine McCoy; a brother, John Curtis and by a sister Theresa White-Barnes. Johnny was born in Duncanville, Alabama, son of the late, Johnny and Bessie (Yarbrough) McCoy and calls Tuscaloosa his hometown.
Johnny moved to Worcester and started working at PresMet, as a machinist. He also worked at Clark University, and Wyman Gordon Company. For many years, Johnny worked at Mercadante Funeral Home and was in integral part of the family and the daily life of his coworkers who he considered friends.
Johnny was a member of Belmont AME Zion Church, where he served on the Usher Board. He was a member, treasurer and Past Grand Exalted Ruler with the Worcester Quinsigamond Lodge of Elks IPBOE of W. He served the Elks with pride and dedication. Through the Elk’s he served as Chaiman of the New England States and Eastern Canada Association and was a General with the National Antler Guard and Assistant Grand Drill Master. He was a longtime volunteer with the Worcester Housing Information Center.
Johnny will be remembered for his positive outlook, gentle smile, and gracious hospitality.
Johnny’s family would like to thank Linda Jones for her kindness, compassion, and the companionship she shared with Johnny; and to the caring staff at UMass-Lake Ave for their guidance and care.
Friends and Family are encouraged, at Johnny’s request, to wear something purple at his visitation and funeral.
Calling Hours for Johnny will be on Wednesday, October 15, from 4 pm until 7 pm in MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation Street, Worcester. His Funeral Service will be on Thursday, October 16, at 11 am at Belmont AME Zion Church, 55 Illinois Street, Worcester. Interment will follow at Worcester County Memorial Park, Paxton.
Johnny has always asked that live plants be sent instead of flowers or donations may be made to the building fund at Belmont AME Zion Church, 55 Illinois Street, Worcester, MA 01610.
