Joan M. (Patenaude) Sampson, 80 of Worcester, formerly of Shrewsbury, passed away after a brief illness on Sunday, May 17, 2026, with her family by her side.
Joan was born in Worcester, a daughter of the late John J. and Marion L. (Brunette) Patenaude. She was raised in Worcester where she was a graduate of South High School. Joan worked as an office assistant for L. Farber Company, Inc. for 25 years, retiring in 1997. She also worked for several years at Mickey ‘s House Daycare in Worcester. Joan enjoyed bowling and going to the casino, arts and crafts, shopping and was a huge fan of Elvis Presley.
Joan is survived by her beloved husband of 59 years, Douglas W. Sampson; a granddaughter, Ashley Troy of Leicester; a sister, Judy Clarke and her husband Dennis of Worcester; a great grandson, John Robert Hughes; her lifelong best friend, Nancy “Mag” Mercier of Oxford; many nieces, nephews and extended family and friends. Besides her parents, Joan was predeceased by her daughter, Darlene Sampson in 2022; two brothers, James Patenaude and John “Jackie” Patenaude, Jr.; her twin sisters, Jane Brick and Janet Rawlston; a grandson, John Troy.
Services for Joan will be held on Thursday, May 21, 2026, with calling hours from 9:30-11:00 am and a funeral service to begin immediately at 11:00 am in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St., Worcester. Burial will follow services in Notre Dame Cemetery, Worcester.
