James J. "Jim" Sauro, 78 of Thompson, CT., passed away on Tuesday, November 25, 2025 after a period of fighting a terminal illness.
Jim was born in Worcester to the late Frank and Thelma (Goodhue) Sauro. He proudly served in the United States Army during the Vietnam War. After his discharge in 1969, he worked as a facilities manager at Jamesbury's Value Corp., later holding similar positions at various biotech companies. His final role was at Biovest in Worcester. After trying retirement for a few years, Jim chose to stay active by working part-time at O'Reilly's Auto Parts in Webster, where he remained until 2023, when he left due to illness.
Jim, a passionate car enthusiast and drag racer, was fortunate to share his lifelong love of racing with his daughter, Shannon, from the day she was born. He proudly named their family racing team “SDJ Racing.” Over the course of his remarkable career, Jim earned numerous accolades and victories, including the prestigious Wally award. He built countless treasured memories with their extended racing family.
Jim brought joy and laughter wherever he went. Known for his quick wit and sharp sense of humor, he could light up any room with his jokes and playful sarcasm—traits lovingly inherited by his daughter, Shannon. He deeply valued the love and bonds he shared with his family and friends, who will always remember his vibrant spirit and warm heart.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife of 43 years, Donna M. (DiStefano) Sauro, and their daughter Shannon Sauro, with whom he lived. He is also survived by his two other daughters, Deborah Hayes and Tina O’Brien. He leaves behind his brother, Frank Sauro, and Frank’s partner, Chris Cook of Missouri; his mother-in-law, Anna DiStefano of Millbury; two brothers-in-law, Salvatore DiStefano and his wife Susan of Shrewsbury, and Charles DiStefano of Millbury; and a sister-in-law, Dianne Mondor, and her husband Jim of Auburn. He was the proud grandfather of six grandchildren: William, David, Katie, Joseph, Nora, and Cara, and uncle to three nephews: Rocco, Salvatore, and Nicholas DiStefano. He will be deeply missed by many friends and extended family.
