James E. Grenier, Sr., 82, of Worcester, passed away on Friday, May 3, 2024, at Notre Dame Long Term Care, while surrounded by loving family. James is reunited with his loving wife of sixty-three years, Carolyn A. (Serra) Grenier.
“Papa”, as many called him is survived by three children, a daughter, Patricia Stankiewicz and her husband Chuck of North Carolina; two sons, James Grenier, Jr. and his wife Janet of Virginia, and Stephen Grenier and his wife Ann Marie of New Jersey; nine adoring grandchildren, Kristen, Kathryn, Charlie, Jessica, Constance, James, Kimberly, Nicholas, Patrick, and Molly; six great grandchildren, Gianna, Sofiya, Christopher, Anya, Ava, and Daniel; a brother, John Grenier and his wife Donna; a sister, Andrea Morin and her husband Roland; along with many nieces, nephews and countless special others who also called him “Papa”. He was predeceased by a brother and sister, Paul Grenier and Frances Sena. James was born in Worcester, son of John E. and Thofelia (Osper) Grenier and has lived here all his life.
James worked as a laborer for many years with the Laborers Union, Local 243. He was a life-long member of Saint Stephen’s Church, and the church men’s club and pitch league. He was a long-time coach for Jack Barry Little League and enjoyed gathering with friends and family members. He enjoyed playing cribbage, cooking, spending time with friends at the Brown Square Civic Club and being with his family. He loved watching sports and was a lifelong Red Sox fan as well as a huge New York Giants football fan.
He and Carolyn enjoyed traveling the world on cruises, but especially loved visiting their children and grandchildren. He spent many hours standing beside his wife and as a tireless worker for her political endeavors.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Notre Dame LTC, for the care and compassion they shared with “Papa” and his family.
Calling Hours will be on Friday, May 10, from 9 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. in MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation Street, Worcester, followed by a procession to an 11 a.m. Funeral Mass at Saint Stephen’s Church, 357 Grafton Street, Worcester, MA 01604.
Interment at Worcester County Memorial Park will be held privately.
