It is with a heavy heart we announce the passing of James J. Cotter, Jr., 84, of Leominster, on Friday, June 6, 2025, in Worcester.
James is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Linda (Combs) Cotter of Leominster; his loving children, Seamus, Shannon, husband Louis Marsella, Michael, Aaron and wife Tawna Rathe; his adored grandchildren, Quincy, Mason, Asher, Leo, and Oliver Cotter and Eli Marsella; in addition, he is survived by many beloved cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. In addition to his dear parents, James was predeceased by his sister, Mary Jane Shadbegian and his brother, David Cotter.
Born in Worcester on January 25, 1941, James was the 2nd child born to James and Mary (Reardon) Cotter. James graduated from St. Peter’s High School in Worcester where he played basketball and football. James also served in the Coast Guard before he continued his education at the University of Nebraska where he obtained bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education.
He served as both a teacher and guidance counselor in Lincoln, NE where he founded a program to assist at risk students by matching them with mentors. He received the Service to Mankind Award from the Lincoln Sertoma Club. After retirement from the public schools, he became Director of Academic Advising at the University of Nebraska. In that role he was named Boss of the Year and received the award for outstanding student advising. Beyond his accomplishments in his career, James was most proud of his family.
James was an avid Nebraska Cornhusker fan and Red Sox fan. He brought laughter and fun to all who he met. Though James is no longer with us and we will forever miss him, we will carry him with us in all that we do. His caring heart and selfless soul are forever ingrained into the hearts of everyone who knew him.
Calling hours will be on Wednesday, June 11, 2025, from 3:00 p.m. until his Funeral Service beginning at 4:00p.m. in the Mercadante Funeral Home & Chapel, 370 Plantation Street, Worcester.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in James’ memory to Tom Osborne TeamMates Mentoring program or First Plymouth Church Hope House, Lincoln NE.
