Elaine M. (Wetmore) Ford, 77, of Poway, California, formerly of Douglas and Shrewsbury, MA, and Hamden, CT, passed away peacefully, Friday, October 9, 2026, with her devoted daughter and son in law by her side. She is welcomed into heaven into the arms of her husband Walter E. Ford, Jr. who left her side in August of 2007. She continued to live in Shrewsbury before moving to California to be close to her daughter and grandchildren in 2024.

Elaine was born in New Haven CT, the daughter of Forest and Margaret (Hill) Wetmore. She grew up in New Haven, earned her bachelor’s degree in education from Southern Connecticut State College and her master’s degree in education from Framingham State College. She then went on to shape young minds in elementary education before retiring after 35 years as a school Principal in Millbury, MA.

Elaine is survived by her daughter and best friend, Audra Rosati and her husband Joseph; two grandchildren she cherished and who lovingly called her Grammy, Sofia and Joseph; two brothers, Kevin Wetmore and his wife Eleanor of Cheshire CT, and Paul Wetmore and his wife Melinda of Santa Monica, CA; nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. In addition to her husband Walter, Elaine was predeceased by a brother, David Wetmore, and two sisters, Maureen Platt, and Barbara Hamilton.

Elaine was a former devoted member and volunteer of St Mary’s Church where she enjoyed cooking for the staff and functions. She was an enthusiastic admirer of the mansions in Newport and would notably ask guests to family functions to wear tiaras. She enjoyed travelling, cruises, being with her daughter and grandchildren and the occasional good slot machine. She was dedicated to her work in education and the guidance she gave to her students.

Friends and relatives are invited to gather for calling hours Tuesday, October 20th 2026, from 4 pm to 7 pm in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. Her funeral will be held Wednesday from the funeral home with a procession to St Mary’s Church, 640 Main St. Shrewsbury where her celebration of Christian burial Mass will be held at 11 am. Burial will follow in Mt. View Cemetery. The family requests those attending to honor Elaine by wearing a tiara to her services.
