Dana M. (Salmon) Johnson

With profound sadness and enduring love, we announce the passing of Dana Magritte Johnson (Salmon), who left this Earth peacefully on September 24, 2026, after a courageous two-year battle with Stage IV cancer. She was 48 years old.

Born on a beautiful autumn day in Worcester, Massachusetts, on October 2, 1977, Dana entered the world as a bright light that would continue to shine throughout her life. She possessed a rare gift for making people feel seen, valued, and loved. Her radiant smile, infectious laughter, and boundless compassion touched every life she encountered. To know Dana was to love her, and to be loved by Dana was a blessing beyond measure.

Dana was the beloved wife of Christopher L. Johnson and devoted mother of Morgan E. Johnson, Micah H. Johnson, and Marcus T. Johnson, who were the greatest joys of her life. Her love for her children was unwavering, and she worked every day to nurture in them the same kindness, empathy, and strength that defined her own character. Morgan, Micah, and Marcus are a beautiful reflection of both Dana and Chris, carrying forward the compassion, generosity, and love she embodied so effortlessly.

She is survived by her loving mother, Elizabeth A. Salmon; her father, Richard L. Salmon Sr., and his wife, Karen; her mother-in-law, Joy Johnson; her sisters, Stephanie Salmon-Palmerino, her husband, Thomas, and Kimberly Salmon; her brothers, Richard "Rich" Salmon, his wife, Amanda, and Ismael "Izzy" Nowick; and her brother-in-law, Phillip Johnson Jr. She was predeceased by her father-in-law, Phillip Johnson Sr.

Dana is also survived by her cherished nieces and nephews, Devon, Isabella, Lennox, Ellis, Lindsay, Alyssa, Taylor, Gabriella, Niko, and Khalil, all of whom she loved fiercely as if they were her own children. She also leaves behind her beloved cat, Seal, whose companionship brought her comfort and joy.

She leaves behind her dearest friends and chosen sisters, Glinda Guzman and Michelle Pabon-Webber, along with the entire Guzman, Pabon, and Webber families, who became a loving extension of her own family. Their bond was one of unwavering friendship, loyalty, and unconditional love.

While it is impossible to name everyone whose life Dana touched, she leaves behind countless dear friends, extended family members, colleagues, former clients, and loved ones who will forever carry her memory in their hearts.

A dedicated social worker, Dana graduated from Springfield College with a bachelor’s degree in social work and devoted her career to helping underserved/underrepresented children, youth and families. She believed wholeheartedly in the potential of every child she served. To Dana, no child was ever just a case file. She treated every child as if they were her own, offering encouragement, advocacy, guidance, love and hope. She inspired young people to dream bigger, aspire higher, and believe in possibilities they may not yet have seen in themselves. She would give the shirt off her back, a seat at her table, and whatever else was needed to help someone in need - succeed.

Dana's compassion was fierce, deep, and sincere. She formed meaningful connections wherever she went, making others feel important and valued. Her friendship was genuine, her loyalty unwavering, and her generosity boundless. The impact she made on the lives of others is immeasurable.

One of Dana's most cherished expressions of love was her signature forehead kiss, a simple gesture that conveyed comfort, encouragement, and affection. She had an extraordinary ability to leave people better than she found them. Her warmth, kindness, and friendship were gifts that will continue to live on in the hearts of everyone fortunate enough to have known her.

Family and faith were at the center of Dana's life. She loved reading, dancing, hiking, cooking, and gathering loved ones around her kitchen island. Even during her most difficult days, she found joy in preparing meals, attending church service on Sundays and bringing people together. Her Sunday dinners nourished not only our bodies but our souls.

She also treasured traveling and creating memories with those she loved most. Whether spending summers in Narragansett, taking family road trips to Virginia, Washington, D.C., and Disney, or enjoying cherished vacations in Puerto Rico, Dana found her greatest happiness in simply being together with family and friends. Those moments of laughter, connection, and love became the memories she treasured most.

Though Dana desperately wished for more time, especially to watch her beloved sons reach important milestones and graduate from high school, she faced her illness with remarkable courage, grace, and strength. In doing so, she taught all who witnessed her journey what it means to persevere with dignity, hope, and faith. While her time here was far too short, her love will continue to guide her children and all who knew her.

Dana was an incredible daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, friend, godmother, and advocate. Her passing leaves an enormous void in the lives of her family, friends, and the countless people whose hearts she touched. Yet her spirit remains woven into the fabric of our lives. We find comfort in knowing that her kindness lives on through the family she cherished, the children she raised, the children she served, and the countless lives she changed through simple acts of compassion and generosity.

We will miss her every day. We will tell her stories, share her laughter, honor her example, and surround her children with the same unconditional love she gave so freely to others. Dana's legacy lives on in her family, her friends, her community, and in every person she inspired to be kinder, stronger, and more compassionate. Her light will continue to shine through each person fortunate enough to have known her.

Services will be held on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at Second Baptist Church in Worcester, Massachusetts. Calling hours will be held from 9:00am – 11:00am with a service immediately following.

In honor of Dana, family and friends are invited to light a candle on her birthday, October 2, or take a walk at the Quabbin Reservoir, reflecting on her love of nature, family, and life's simple joys.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests plants in her memory. To continue Dana's legacy of believing in and uplifting young people, the family will establish the Dana M. Johnson Scholarship Fund, administered through the Worcester State Foundation, to support students in foster care as they pursue their educational dreams. Additional information regarding donations will be shared in the coming weeks.
