Cecilia Gyan, 71, passed away peacefully after a short illness on Monday, February 9, 2026, at UMass Memorial Medical Center in Worcester.
She is survived and lovingly remembered by her devoted children: Josephine Putu and her husband, Dubois Nyamikeh; Nana Yaa and her husband, Kwabena Nimo; Hannah Bosompem and her husband, Kwabena Bosompem; Bernard Quainoo (stepson); Frank Ofori (Ghana), Evelyn Ofori ( Ghana), Dorothy Quainoo Putu ( Ghana), and Vivian Antwi (niece). She was also deeply cherished and faithfully cared for by Christine Peltier, Mary Boateng, Ellen Coffie, Courage Dziekpor, and Alberto Arthur, Ps. Mr & Mrs Owusu-Achim
She leaves behind many loving grandchildren, numerous siblings, extended family members, and countless friends whose lives were touched by her warmth and kindness. She was predeceased by her devoted husband, Samuel Putu, who passed away on June 25, 2009.
Cecilia, affectionately known as “Sweet Sixteen,” was born in Assin Fosu, Central Region of Ghana, to the late Samuel Gyan and Agatha Yaa Asantewaa. She was educated with honors at OLA Girls Secondary School and later continued her tertiary education at Ho Technical University in Ho, Volta Region, Ghana. She carried herself with dignity, grace, and excellence throughout her life.
A gifted and passionate cook, Cecilia owned and operated her catering business for over 40 years. She was widely known for preparing beloved traditional Ghanaian cuisines that brought people together and created lasting memories. Through her cooking, she expressed love, hospitality, and generosity to all who entered her home. She was also a talented seamstress, skillfully making clothing for both men and women. Her hands were truly gifted whether holding a needle, preparing food, or lifted in prayer.
Faith and family were the foundation of Cecilia’s life. She deeply loved God and served faithfully, caring not only for her own children but for many others who were not biologically hers. Her home was a place of refuge, warmth, and guidance. She was a peacemaker, always seeking unity and calm within her family regardless of the circumstances.
Cecilia cherished her grandchildren and held a special bond with her sons-in-law, treating them as her own sons. She loved reading the Bible and sharing Scripture with her grandchildren. Her favorite verse was Psalm 123. She found joy in gospel music, loved dancing, and was known for her elegance and beautiful sense of style. She enjoyed dressing up for special occasions and carried herself with confidence and poise.
Cecilia will be remembered for her kindness, strength, service to others, unwavering faith, and the legacy of love she leaves behind.
Calling hours will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2026, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Mercadante Funeral Home & Chapel, 370 Plantation Street, Worcester. A funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. in the funeral home. She will then be laid to rest at Mountain View Cemetery in Shrewsbury.
