Barbara A. (Costello) Caparso, 87, a longtime resident of Shrewsbury, formerly of Auburn passed away peacefully Monday, January 5th, 2026.
Barbara was born in Boston, the daughter of Henry and Agnes (Wolkowski) Costello. She was raised in Quincy. With a calling to help shape the minds of young children, Barbara earned her Bachelor’s degree in education from Emmanuel College in Boston and spent over 30 years teaching students in the Worcester Public School system at several schools including Wawecus Road School, Nelson Place School, and Burncoat Junior High School before retiring.
Barbara’s life partner of 35 years, William Sigalis, passed away in 2021. She is survived by sons, Philip Caparso of Stratham, NH and Peter Caparso (Suzanne) of Jupiter Island, FL, stepson, Scott Sigalis (Cheryl) of Estero, FL; her grandchildren, Richard, Alessandra, Marielle, John, and Lucas Caparso, and Mason Sigalis; her brother, John Costello of Novato, CA, and sister, Mary Irwin (Michael) of Ventura, CA; many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. In addition to her parents and life partner, a brother, James Costello and his wife, Geraldine, predeceased her.
Barbara was a member of the Massachusetts and New England Teachers Associations. She was an enthusiastic supporter of Broadway and local theatre productions. Along with Bill, she traveled frequently to New York and Boston among other places to take in performances. An avid reader, Barbara participated in numerous book clubs, enjoying the lively discussion and camaraderie of the groups. A longtime resident of Quinsigamond Shores, her friendships there enhanced her life. Barbara always had a project going, a book in progress, a movie to watch, and a card to write. She cared deeply for her friends and family and loved to share a laugh, especially late at night.
Friends and relatives are invited to attend calling hours Saturday, January 10th from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm followed by a memorial service in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Barbara’s memory may be made to Friends of the Shrewsbury Public Library, 609 Main St., Shrewsbury, MA 01545, Music Worcester, 319 Main St., Worcester, MA 01608 or a charity of your choice supporting the arts.
