Anthony Albert “Tex" Coffone, 92, of Worcester, passed away peacefully at home, Saturday, July 8, 2023, with the family he loved gathered at his side.
Tony was born, raised, and lived in the Grafton Hill neighborhood. He graduated from Worcester Boys trade, joined the U.S. Navy serving his country proudly for six years during the Korean War. Always proud of his Italian Heritage, Tony was one of six children of Italian immigrants Carmine and Elvira (DeSantis) Coffone. A year post discharge from the Navy, Tony married the “Love of his life” Nancy Marie Toscano in September of 1956. Together they raised five children with faith, love, and devotion over the next 67 years. .
Tony was most appreciated for his baking talents and decorating skills for all types of special occasions. Notebly wedding cakes, and cakes for family and friends. He also could be found working as a baker for the former Scano’s Bakery on Shrewsbury Street, with the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Department of Mental health. He began at the Worcester State Hospital, before accepting a position with the Medfield State Hospital where he was overall buyer, asst Steward and hospital funds manager retiring after 40 plus years with the DMH.
Anthony worked very hard, making beautiful memories for his family at his home on Cape Cod. He always had a smile, can do attitude or wiliness to help anyone at any time. He was a member of Our Lady of Loreto Church, an active 50-year member and past president of the Eastside Post 201, American Legion, the Pope John Counsel Knights of Columbus, and the Worcester Lodge 168, Order Sons of Italy. Anthony was an avid runner. After joining the Medfield Running group it became his passion, forming special bonds and friendships participating in 5 marathons, even running throughout his retirement. He loved to travel, and see the world with Nancy, to notable places like, Italy, and Portugal. He also loved to dance with Nancy by his side. He will be missed by his family more than words can express.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy; five children, Charles J. Coffone and his wife Leslie, and William A. Coffone all of Worcester, James A. Coffone and his wife Nancy of Rochester, Ma, Lisa M Coffone of Uxbridge, Mary Jo Lizotte and her husband Ronnie of Franklin; a brother, William “Bill” Coffone of Millbury, and a sister, Rita Kane of Whitinsville; eight grandchildren, Christina, Anthony, Angela, Robert, Juliana, Melanie, Mia, and Joseph; a great grandson, Brando James; Many nieces, nephews, extended family and many friends. In addition to his parents, two brothers, Angelo and Ernest Coffone and a sister Mary Coffone predeceased him.
A period of calling hours will be held Friday, July 14th from 10 am to 11:30 am followed by his funeral Mass in Our Lady of Loreto Church, 37 Massasoit Rd. His longtime friend and pastor Monsignor Stephen Pedone will celebrate. Burial with U.S. Navy honors will follow in St John Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial remembrances in his name can be made to the Eastside Post 201, American Legion 326 Plantation St. 01604.
