Listen to Obituary

Alphonse V. “Butch” Etre, 76, of Rockland, passed away peacefully on Sunday, July 12, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family.

Born in Worcester, Butch was the beloved son of the late Alphonse and Helen E. (Gaulin) Etre. A graduate of Worcester Boys Trade, he owned and operated Etre’s Auto Body on Franklin Street in Worcester for more than 40 years, earning the trust and respect of generations of customers through his craftsmanship, honesty, and dedication. Later, he worked as an auto appraiser for Amica Insurance until his retirement in 2006.

A devoted member of St. John’s Church, Butch served as a lector for many years, quietly sharing his faith and commitment to his parish community.

While his greatest devotion was always to his family, music was one of the defining joys of his life. A gifted drummer from an early age, Butch performed in drum corps before going on to play with numerous local bands throughout the Worcester area. His smile was never brighter than when he was seated behind a drum kit. In later years, he proudly became a member of the Shriners Drum Corps and found great fulfillment volunteering his time teaching drum circles, sharing his love of music with others.

Butch also developed a passion for cycling and was a longtime participant and volunteer with the Pan-Mass Challenge, supporting its mission with the same generosity and enthusiasm that characterized every part of his life.

Of all the roles he cherished, none brought him greater pride than being "Pops" to his three grandsons. Whether cheering from the sidelines or sitting in the stands, he rarely missed one of their games or sporting events. His unwavering love, encouragement, and presence will remain one of the greatest gifts he gave them.

Butch leaves behind his beloved wife of 51 years, Sharon A. (May) Etre; his two sons, Brett Etre of Los Angeles, California, and Dana Etre and his wife, Laura, of Milton; his cherished grandsons, Miles, William, and Russell Etre; his sisters, Debra Morse and husband Donald and Jacqueline Howe, of Worcester; as well as many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his sister, Ann Sullivan.

Relatives and friends are invited to calling hours on Friday, July 17, 2026, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Mercadante Funeral Home & Chapel, 370 Plantation Street, Worcester.
