Isabel Johnson

Isabel R. (Benson) Johnson, 84, of Worcester, passed away peacefully, Friday, April 25th 2008, in the University of Massachusetts Hospital. Isabel's husband Howard Johnson passed away in 1992. She is survived by, her children, Jocelyn J. Ekeh and Benjamin L. Johnson; her cherished granddaughter, Olivia Ekeh; many nieces and nephews. Isabel was born in Camden, S.Carolina last of 10 children born to Benjamin J. and Annette V. (Carlos) Benson. She grew up in Worcester, spent 30 years in New Haven, CT before moving back to Worcester. Isabel worked many years for the Burnside Building before retiring. She previously worked at Knowlton Jewelry. Isabel was a member of St. Andrew United Methodist Church, the Watch care group of John Street Baptist Church, and the Quinsigamond Lodge of Elks, Nokomis Temple. An accomplished singer, Isabel sang with several area bands traveling to night spots in the Massachusetts area. A Funeral service will be held Saturday, May 3rd at 3:00 p.m. in John Street Baptist Church, John St. Burial will be at the convenience of the family. A period of calling hours will be held from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. prior to the funeral. The MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. is honored to assist the family with arrangements.
