Nicholas A. Marchese, Sr., 73, of Worcester unexpectedly passed away Tuesday, October 15, 2013 following a long illness. Nicholas was born in Worcester, the son of the late Antonio and Louise (Perrone) Marchese. He graduated from St. Peter's High School in Worcester in 1959. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in 1962, where he was trained and served as a radio operator and cryptographer. Over the next four years, he was stationed at Lackland AFB, Texas; Sheppard AFB, Texas; and in Japan. After he was honorably discharged in 1966, Nicholas returned to Worcester where he met the love of his life and partner for the next 46 years, Claire M. Laperriere. After their marriage in 1967, they briefly lived in Shrewsbury before settling in the Greendale area of Worcester to raise their family. Nicholas joined the U.S. Postal Service in 1968 where he worked as a letter carrier in the greater Worcester area for 18 years before his promotion to route inspector/analyst. He spent his final years before retirement as a postal supervisor out of the Sudbury Post Office. He retired in 2000 after 32 years of total service. After his retirement from the U.S. Postal Service, he briefly worked part-time for Allmerica before becoming a poll worker for the City of Worcester. Nicholas is survived by the family he loved so much: his wife, Claire; his two devoted children, Beth A. Marchese of Waltham, Mass., and Nicholas A. Marchese, Jr. of Worcester; a sister, Maureen Barber in Seattle, Wash.; as well as many aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family, and friends. Nicholas was a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees (NARFE), a lifetime member of the Greendale Retired Men's Club, and a lifetime member of the Worcester Senior Center. He was an enthusiastic stamp collector, coin collector, and pitch player. He was also a regular blood donor for the American Red Cross. Nicholas loved taking nature walks; animals, especially turtles; and traveling. Fall was his favorite time of the year. His family was his life's inspiration and he cherished the times he could spend with his wife, children, and extended family. Nothing made him happier than being with them. The funeral will be held 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 19, from the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St., Worcester, followed by a Mass at 10:00 a.m. in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, 24 Mulberry St., Worcester. Burial with military honors will follow in Notre Dame Cemetery, 162 Webster St., Worcester. In lieu of flowers, memorial remembrances in his name can be made to the Central Mass Vets, Inc., 69 Grove St., Worcester, Mass. 01608, or to the charity of the donor's choice. The Marchese family would like to thank Bayada Home Health Care of Worcester, Mass., for their care, comfort, and compassion over the past four months.
