John L. Healy, 70, a longtime Boylston resident and former, 32 year employee of the U.S. Postal Service passed away Thursday, February 14th 2013 with family by his side.
John was born in Worcester one of 14 children of Frederick F. and Mary G. (Brown) Healy. John grew up in Boylston, graduated from Worcester Boys Trade class of 1960. John then joined the U.S. Air Force to serve his country during the Vietnam War as a fighter mechanic stationed at Stewart AFB in NY, Lackland AFB in Texas and Keflavik AFB in Iceland. Upon returning to Boylston he met and married his devoted wife of the next 43 years Patricia A. Dumont. Together they settled in Boylston to raise their family.
John is survived by his wife Patricia; his three beloved children, Andrea M. Healy and her fiancé Max Goodman of Paxton, John S. and Christopher M. Healy of Boylston; three cherished granddaughters whom he loved so much and who loved him, Courtney and Lyndsey Letourneau and Brooke Healy. He also leaves behind, two brothers, James Healy and his wife Jolene of Boylston, Paul Healy and his wife Sharon of Worcester; two sisters, Patricia Derby and her husband Ralph of Sterling, Katherine Wiles and her husband Donald of Shrewsbury; Many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Five brothers, Fran, Hera, Walter, Richard and George Healy and five sisters, Gertrude Condon, Marjorie Collins, Virginia Turcotte, Maureen Bucholz and Mary Healy, all predeceased him.
John worked hard his whole career to provide for his family. He began as a driver/mechanic for the Fuller Bus Company in Boylston, then working as a Bricklayer for the Local 6 bricklayers union 10 years and finally obtaining a position as a mechanic with the U.S. Postal Service in Worcester for the next 32 years before retiring. He also taught the art of bricklaying for the City of Worcester Nightlife Course program.
Active in his community, John was a member of St Mary of the Hills Church, a volunteer fire fighter for the town 10 years, a member and past commander of the Barton Brown Button Post 398 American Legion, the DAV Chapter 4 in Worcester, a member and Union Steward of the Postal Workers Union, a member of the Adelphi Council 4181 Knights of Columbus in Shrewsbury and 4th degree Bishop O’Reilly assembly. With all his activities, John found the best moments in his life spending time with his large extended family, helping others in need, and especially attending his granddaughters sports activities from local sports through High School and College. He would never miss a game he could get to.
Friends and relatives are invited to visit with the family Sunday, February 17th from 3 pm to 6 pm in The MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St. His funeral will be held Monday, February 18th from the funeral home with a procession to St Mary of the Hills Church, 630 Cross Street where his celebration of life Mass will be held at 10:00 am. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Pine Grove Cemetery. Memorial remembrances may be made to St Mary of the Hills Memorial Fund, 630 Cross St. Boylston 01505.
