Biography

Mae E. (Wheeler) Groccia, 78, formerly of Oxford, passed away Friday, December 19th 2008, at the Village of Fillmore Pond, Bennington, VT.
Mae’s husband of 43 years Robert W. Groccia passed away in 1995. She is survived by her eleven children, Michael J. Groccia and his wife Cyndy of Hudson N.H; Paul R. Groccia of Anchorage Alaska, Brian K. Groccia of Sugarland Tex, John D. Groccia of Massachusetts, David S. Groccia and his wife Maggy of Washington DC, Bruce A. Groccia and his wife Mignon of North Carolina; Kathleen M. Groccia of Leicester, MaryEllen Groccia of Bennington, VT, AnneMarie Krasnecky of Webster, Gail F. Lowell of Dudley, and Lynda A. Cutone and her husband Mark of Nantucket. Two brothers, Richard Wheeler of Worcester and Robert J. Wheeler of Whitinsville; two sisters, Irene I. Rudolph of Marietta, GA and Blanche E. Carlson of Worcester; 27 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews. Mae was born in Worcester, a daughter of Merritt and Mary I. (Hamill) Wheeler. She graduated from Commerce High and the Household Practical Nursing School in Boston. Mae grew up in Worcester, lived, raised her family and worked as a Certified Nursing Assistant for Sandlewood Nursing home in Oxford more than 45 years before moving to Bennington.
Mae was a member of St. Roch’s Church, the Auburn and Grafton American Legion Post Ladies Auxiliaries and the Retired State, County and Municipal employee’s association. Mae was a simple, gentle woman who cherished the time raising her family, watching them grow, enjoying their activities and companionship.
The funeral will be held Tuesday, December 23rd from the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL; 370 Plantation St. WITH A MASS AT St. Roch’s Church, 332 Main St. Oxford. Burial will follow in Worcester County Memorial Park in Paxton. Friends and relatives are invited to visit with the family Monday, December 22nd from 5 to 8 p.m in the funeral home. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association 20 Speen St. Framingham or the Alzheimer’s Research Care of the The UMass Memorial Foundation 333 South Street Shrewsbury, Massachusetts 01545.
