Worcester Police SGT Joseph C Legor

Retired Worcester Police Sergeant Joseph C. Legor, 83 of Worcester passed away peacefully with family gathered at his side Friday, April 27th, 2018.

Joseph was born and raised in Worcester, son of Athanas Grigor and Elizabeth (Breen) Grigor.  After graduating from High School, Joseph joined the U.S. Air Force, serving his country proudly during the Korean War as part of the Air Force Rescue Unit and later the 187th Military Police Battalion.  Upon discharge from service Joe was appointed to the Worcester Police Department and served the citizens of Worcester for almost 20 years before retiring as a Sergeant.  Joe notably was one of the first officers of the Worcester Police Mounted unit both on Horseback and with the newly established motorcycle patrol.  

After retiring from the police department, Joe owned Art’s Diner and several other small businesses. He then worked for Fallon Healthcare for many years until his final retirement.

Joe is survived by the love of his life and wife of more than 45 years, Joanne  Legor; his five children, Danny Legor of Portsmouth NH, Elizabeth and her husband Dean Peters, Matthew Legor, Kristen Legor, Jennifer and son-in-law David Carelli all of Worcester;  a brother, Patrick Legor and his life partner, Carol Murphy of Grafton; two sisters, Margaret “Claire” Goulet of Sutton and Jean Violante of Worcester; two grandchildren, Breen Peters and Lily Grace Carelli; many nieces, nephews, grand nephews and nieces,  brothers and sisters in law, extended family and friends.   His sisters Eleanor Bechard, Shirley Goulet, Joan Shooshan, and Elizabeth “Betty” Stranieri all predeceased him. 

Joe was a lifelong member of St Stephen’s Church.  A member and former Vice President of the Worcester Retired Police and Firefighter Association, the Worcester Police Credit Union, Police Supervisors Union local, Massachusetts Police Association and the American Legion.   A dedicated friend to all, Joe would light up a room with his presence and captivate his audience with his storytelling.  A man who loved his family, passionately served his country and was proudly committed to his beloved City of Worcester.

Friends and relatives are invited to visit with the Legor family Tuesday May 1st from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St.  His funeral will be held Wednesday, May 2nd from the funeral home with a procession to St Stephens’s church, 357 Grafton Street where his Celebration of Life Mass will be held at 11:00 am.   Burial with military honors will follow at St. John Cemetery.   In lieu of flowers, memorial remembrances in his name can be made to the Boys & Girls Club of Worcester; Attention: Liz Hamilton, 65 Tainter Street, Worcester, MA 01610

The Legor family would like to extend their thanks to Joseph’s caregivers, Judy Kungu, Monica Ngotho, Petra Ackermann; his nurses Nicole, Giselle, Kim and Vanessa; his CNA Krysta; as well as the VNA Care Hospice of Worcester for the care, compassion and comfort they gave to Joe and their family during a difficult time.
