Walter G Lalone

April 16, 1925 — October 10, 2018

Walter G. Lalone, 93 son of the late Alfred and Albanie (Marchand) Lalone, passed away with the family he loved gathered at his side Wednesday, October 10, 2018.

Walter was born in Worcester on April 16, 1925, and was a life-long Worcester resident.  On his seventeenth birthday in April of 1942, while a student at Worcester Boys Trade, Walter enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II, serving his country for three and a half years. Discharged as a painter 2nd class, Walter accepted a position with the City of Worcester, in the maintenance department as a painter, rising through the ranks to retire as Maintenance Foreman.  While still in the Navy, on May 2nd 1945,  he married the “Love of his Life” for the next 73 years, Mary Simone.

Walter is survived by his wife Mary; his two children, Ronald S. Lalone and his wife Diane of Grafton, Susan D. Lalone and her husband Peter Gianonatti of Salem; a brother, Donald Lalone of York, ME; two sisters, Janet Sefakis of Worcester and Lorraine Lambert in Florida;  nieces, nephews, and extended family members.   Walter was predeceased by two brothers, Alfred and Robert Lalone and two sisters, Theresa O’Neil and Deanna Provost.

Walter was a longtime active member of Immaculate Conception Church, and the Worcester Catholic Community.   He served as a CCD teacher, Eucharistic minister, and as Mass lector.  Walter and Mary also served as church Family Life counselor, Parish Council members, right to life members and the St Vincent de Paul Society members.   Walter was also a member of the Alhambra Council Knights of Columbus and a 4th degree knight of the Bishop O’Rielly assembly.  He was a constant visitor and member of the Greendale retired men’s club at the YMCA and a longtime team member of the Diocese of Worcester Cursillo movement.  In 2011, Walter and Mary were recognized by the St Vincent de Paul Society of the Worcester Diocese, awarded the “Top Hat Award” for their outstanding service to the members of the catholic community who suffered hardships. 

Walter was an avid golfer, and a diehard Red Sox Fan.  He and Mary were fortunate to travel abroad in their early years around the world, especially to Hawaii to visit with relatives. 

A period of calling hours will be held from 9:30 to 11:00 am Monday, October 15th in the MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St, followed by a procession to his church, Immaculate Conception Church, 353 Grove St where Rev. Walter Riley will celebrate his Mass of Christian burial at 11:30 am.   Burial with U.S. Navy honors will follow in Notre Dame Cemetery.   In lieu of flowers memorial remembrances in Walter’s name can be made to the Diocese of Worcester Cursillo movement, 49 Elm Street, Worcester or the Jewish Healthcare Hospice, 626 Salisbury St., Worcester, MA.
