Helene P Manning

December 7, 1927 — October 4, 2018

Helene Patricia Manning of Worcester, 90, passed away peacefully on October 4, 2018 after a brief illness.

Helene was born on December 7, 1927 to Stanley M. Manning and Nora F. (Dowd) Manning. Raised in Worcester, she graduated from Worcester State University in 1951. She went on to do graduate work at several Boston area universities.  For a time, she pursued a career in business before turning her attention to the field of education. She began her teaching career in Florida and then taught for many years in the Worcester public schools, including Providence Street Junior High, and Gates Lane Elementary School.

Helene was an avid reader and a lover of literature and the arts. The ascension of John Kennedy to the presidency in 1960 began a lifelong dedication to democratic politics.  She lived a fiercely independent life. While decades of students knew her as Ms. Manning, to her many nieces and nephews, who she was devoted to, she was known simply as “Aunt Helene.”

Helene is predeceased by her brother, Robert D. Manning, her nephew, Sean Greene and her niece Jane Greene.

She is survived by her sister Dolores Manning Greene and her husband Dr. Richard E. Greene both of Worcester, by her nieces and nephews: Stephen M. Greene of Amston, Ct., Kathryn M. Jodka  of North Andover, Maura A, Greene of Boston, Richard E. Greene, Jr. of Shrewsbury., Dr. David A. Greene of Waterville, ME, Thomas C. Greene of Montpelier, VT., Daniel D. Greene  of New Haven, CT,  Judith M.Brown of Medfield,  Robert S Manning of Boston, Jeffrey Manning of Bristol, VA, and Brian C. Manning of Boston.

At her request, funeral services and burial in the family plot at St. John’s Cemetery will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that donations may be made in support of her love of reading to the Worcester Public Library Foundation, 2 Salem Street, Worcester, MA 01608.   The MERCADANTE FUNERAL HOME & CHAPEL, 370 Plantation St is honored to assist the family with arrangements.
